An Interview with Chiropractor Stephen Pruden

September 22, 2014

BY EMMALY WIEDERHOLT

Dr. Stephen Pruden has been in chiropractic practice for 30 years and has offices in Manhattan and Long Island, New York. It is a family practice that features sports care, particularly for dancers, runners and golfers. The practice also uses a multi-disciplinary approach incorporating acupuncture, nutrition, naturopath and the medical arts. I contacted him to learn more about how chiropractic can provide balance and care.

Emmaly Wiederholt: What sorts of stress (both physical and psychological) do you see most often in your patients?

Dr. Stephen Pruden: The most common physical stresses are repetitive in origin in that they wear on the same body parts over and over. They tend to adversely affect posture, making every physical task more difficult than it has to be, starting with standing. For some this is a sedentary problem, which often leads to back and neck pain, and for others this may be repetitive impact on feet, legs and hips, as with a dancer or someone who stands on a sales floor all day.

The psychological stress I see most frequently...  [Read Entire Article ]

About Your Back Pain, Neck Pain and Lower Back Pain Symptoms

Back Pain

Back pain is the number one cause of disability in people aged 18 - 46, and the second leading cause of missed workdays. Back pain is generally due to poor posture and lifting techniques, failure to seek medical care following an accident, failure to receive adequate treatment for back injuries, and decreased physical activity. Chiropractic care focuses on the cause of your problem and does not rely on medication for short-term relief of symptoms.

Neck Pain

Recent studies show that at any given time more than 10% of Americans are suffering from neck pain. The neck is comprised of many delicate and pain sensitive structures, and is frequently exposed to abuse and stress that may result in neck pain. Some common factors involved in neck pain are incomplete recovery from past injuries, poor posture, and prolonged sitting. Regular spinal alignments generally help to prevent neck pain due to these sources.

Lower Back Pain

More than 80% of Americans report suffering from lower back pain at some point in their lives. Lower back pain is the leading disability reason stated in workers' compensation claims. When left untreated, lower back pain can severely restrict mobility. Most lower back problems, which result in lower back pain, require proper treatment in order to achieve complete rehabilitation.

Inspiration

Dr. Stephen Pruden has been inspired by the ability people have to improve their own health. Chiropractic philosophy understands that the return to health and optimal condition is brought about within the patient. The doctor's job is to identify the problem, develop an effective treatment program to help remove the barriers that are currently preventing the patient from improving and most importantly, to educate the patient about how the condition may have begun

This last aspect of the care at Dr. Pruden's office is considered vital. A patient who understands the condition as well as the treatment plan is more involved in the continuous improvement of communication between doctor and patient which not only speeds recovery but helps prevent relapses.

We guarantee that our preventative chiropractic care will help identify early signs of trouble and enhance your quality of life. Don't live in pain one more day, visit Dr. Stephen Pruden, D.C. and start traveling the road of recovery.

Our Vision for Chiropractic Care on Long Island and NYC Chiropractic Care

We believe that the chiropractic profession of America should occupy that place in its own and the public esteem to which it is entitled and that the chiropractor should be a leader in his community - in character, in learning, in dignified bearing, and in courteous relations with the professional colleagues. Dr. Pruden is professionally dedicated to the following objectives:

•   To maintain the science and art of chiropractic as a separate and distinct health profession dedicated to the service of mankind.
•   To maintain unimpaired the chiropractic principle and practice based on the premise that the relationship between structure and function in the human body is a significant health factor.
•   To protect, promote, and promulgate the advancement of the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic and the professional welfare of members of this association in every legitimate and ethical way. This to the end that people in every locality shall have knowledge of the health benefits of chiropractic and the unhampered right and opportunity of obtaining the qualified services of doctors of chiropractic of unquestioned ability.

Since they serve humanity in the specialized "science and art" which utilize the inherent recuperative powers of the body and the relationship between the musculoskeletal structures and functions of the body, particularly of the spinal column and the nervous system in the restoration and maintenance of health," doctors of chiropractic have a unique health service to offer not available from any other source.

How Teeth Clenching & TMJ can be Related to Spinal Alignment

February 2015

BY Dr. Steve Pruden

Dr. Stephen Pruden has been in chiropractic practice for 30 years and has offices in Manhattan and Long Island, New York.

Chiropractic is primarily concerned with balancing the spine and pelvis as the central weight bearing system. This allows efficient management of the body's systems to occur. Unfortunately, our demanding schedules often enforce distortions of the pelvis through long hours spent seated or bending or standing.

Once the pelvis is distorted it often causes your hips to be uneven which makes your leg lengths unleveled. You may have noticed you must tailor each hem of your slacks differently. This disparity also causes your head to tilt when you stand. This may be visible in photos of you.

Your jaw can be affected by this head tilt because it uses gravity to open and thus the forces on each side are uneven. This leads to TMJ problems like grinding or clenching and can adversely affect your teeth and gums.

Correction of the pelvic tilt, head and neck can ease the burden on the jaw and help in the elimination of these unwanted conditions.

Essentials of Carbohydrate Replenishment During Exercise- James Meschino DC, MS

For many types of sports that rely upon carbohydrate metabolism as the primary fuel for muscle performance, 60-70 percent of an athlete's diet should be comprised of carbohydrate calories. This includes sports involving repeated bouts of all-out effort, as well as long-distance events. For these events, carbohydrate energy represents the predominant energy source for maximum sustained power. Carbohydrate depletion during these events is known to hasten the onset of fatigue and to hinder performance capabilities. As a result, athletes should be aware of effective carbohydrate repletion techniques as a means of optimizing their performance. To read more on this article click on the link belowhttp://www.chiroweb.com/columnist/meschino

Time for More Vitamins, Less Drugs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Study Shows Multivitamin Use by the Elderly Has "Potentially Powerful" Impact on Public Health, Medicare Expenditures

As you age, your immune system weakens, leaving you more vulnerable to infection and disease. This is especially true if you're over the age of 65. Unfortunately, evidence suggests that up to one third of all elderly adults in the U.S. fail to get the amounts and types of food necessary to meet essential nutrient and energy requirements, leaving them open to a wide range of infectious and noninfectious diseases, including heart disease, osteoporosis and various forms of cancer. These findings have prompted some scientists to recommend that all adults, and especially members of the elderly population, take a multivitamin supplement daily to help fight off disease and keep the immune system functioning optimally.

A study presented at an October 2003 meeting in Washington, D.C. suggests that daily multivitamin use by older adults is "a relatively inexpensive yet potentially powerful way to improve one's health," and that the health effects from vitamins are particularly important for improving cardiovascular health and immunity. The study also suggests that over a five-year period, taking a multivitamin can lead to considerable savings associated with health care costs - more than $1.6 billion over the next five years, even after adjusting for the cost of providing vitamins to every elderly person in the U.S.

Attack on alternative medicine

Is the clock ticking on alternative healthcare?

By Galen O. Ballard, PhD

According to the March 2003 issue of the AARP Bulletin, the American healthcare system is in a state of collapse.

In a comparison of quality healthcare by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States ranked 37th, coming in behind such nations as Andorra, Malta, Oman and Singapore.Despite the average $4,600 per capita spent for healthcare in the United States — which is more than twice the average of other countries, such as France ($2,125) and Japan ($1,759) — our healthcare system is faltering while costs keep rising.

In most developed nations the government controls and administers some form of socialized healthcare. Costs are carefully controlled and all viable alternatives to expensive allopathic protocols and drugs are considered.By comparison, healthcare in the United States is in the domain of those enterprises that stand to benefit from expensive medical practices, despite the fact that the American public is developing a thirst for alternative healthcare, as indicated in a 1998 survey reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which found that 60 million were using alternative therapies.
